Double Chocolate Malt Donuts

Whenever my kids have other kids over, I always feel the need to make something fun for them to eat.  It’s fun for me to make fun food, too. 😉  I was dealing with a sleepover, and I wanted a breakfast treat.  I don’t normally like to make pancakes the morning of, so I started scouring my Pinterest Breakfast board.  As soon as I saw the chocolate baked donuts, I knew that was it.  It’s been a while since I made donuts, and they’re SO fast and easy.  Since my cravings are generally in charge of what I make, and I had a raging chocolate craving, I went for Double Chocolate Malt Donuts.  I topped them with a chocolate malt glaze and crushed Whoppers, so these donuts were whopping good.  😆

I hopped on the baked donut bandwagon some time back, and I’ve made two versions thus far — my Strawberry Covered Baked Chocolate Donuts, and Coconut-Lime Baked Donuts.  I’m always on the lookout for the next great recipe and thinking up different spins. The sky’s the limit with these critters.

So what kind of mom am I putting crushed candy on donuts for kids to eat for breakfast?  Well….it’s not the best, nor the healthiest idea, but I was going for broke here.  I got caught up in the whole chocolate malt thing, and when I’m cooking or baking, I have a vision of what the finished product should look like.  In this case, the finished product had crushed Whoppers on top for texture and extra malt flavor, so I just couldn’t help myself.  In my defense, the donuts are baked, which does make them better for you.  😀

Baked donuts can be on the dry side, but I found this recipe to be very moist and delicious.  I added Greek yogurt to these, and that always helps!

The topping on the baked donuts is almost more important than the donut itself.  It’s the crowning glory!  The glaze is a chocolate malt glaze, which is SO yummy.  My glaze was a little on the thinner side, so if you like it thicker, just add more powdered sugar.  Once the donuts are glazed, you can top them with crushed Whoppers, sprinkles, or whatever you desire.  Whatever you decide on, you’re going to love these donuts!  🙂

Double Chocolate Malt Donuts are moist, chocolate malt donuts topped with a chocolate malt glaze and crushed Whoppers. These are whopping good donuts!
Serves: 8 donuts
Ingredients
Donuts:
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed (light or dark)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 tablespoons Ovaltine chocolate malt powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 large egg
  • 6 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt (I used 0% Chobani)
  • ¼ cup low fat milk
  • ¼ cup canola oil
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup miniature semi-sweet chocolate chips
Glaze:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons Ovaltine chocolate malt powder
  • Crushed Whoppers, chocolate chips, or chocolate jimmies, for garnish
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Spray all (6) cavities of a donut pan, plus (2) more cavities in a second pan. If you only have one pan, just bake the last two after the first batch has cooled and been removed from the pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa, 2 tablespoons Ovaltine, and baking soda. Set aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg, Greek yogurt, milk, canola oil, and vanilla until well combined. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring just until combined. Fold in the chocolate chips. Pour the batter into a large resealable ziplock bag and snip off one of the corners with scissors. Pipe the batter into the donut cavities about ⅔ full. Bake one pan at a time on the middle rack of the oven for 8 minutes. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Repeat with the other (2) donuts.
Prepare the glaze:
  1. Once all the donuts have completely cooled, prepare the glaze. Set a wire rack over a baking sheet lined with waxed paper. Place the powdered sugar in a small bowl. Place the milk in a microwaveable mug or cup, and microwave for about 45 seconds until warm. Add the Ovaltine to the milk and stir until dissolved. Pour the malted milk into the powdered sugar and stir until smooth. Dip the donuts into the glaze, then garnish with the crushed Whoppers, sprinkles, or chocolate chips. Place on the wire rack until the glaze sets. Repeat until all of the donuts are glazed. Store leftover donuts in an airtight container at room temperature.
Notes
You can substitute the Greek yogurt for regular plain yogurt or sour cream.
