If you had a choice between sweet potato and regular fries, which ones would you choose? While I love both, I almost always choose sweet potato fries!
A lot of people that I talk to tell me that they’re not into sweet potatoes, and it’s mostly because they associate them with sweet potato casserole.
While I enjoy my sweet potato casserole for the holidays, I prefer savory sweet potato recipes like my roasted sweet potatoes and these grilled sweet potato fries so much more.
These grilled sweet potato fries are so special because they’re sweet and smoky, incredibly easy, and everyone always loves them.
It’s a great idea to grill these fries in the summertime, because who wants to turn the oven on when it’s hot outside?
Everything tastes better with grill marks too. 🙂
I served my sweet potato fries with an easy, sweet and spicy sriracha ketchup. It’s completely optional, but it will take your fries to the next level!
How to cut sweet potato fries
It’s so much easier to cut sweet potato wedges into uniform size and thickness when the sweet potatoes are around the same size.
Look for sweet potatoes that are small to medium in size and on the thinner side.
Sweet potato wedges may be cut two different ways:
- Cut the ends off of both sides of the sweet potato. Stand the sweet potato upright on a cutting board, and cut in half, then place cut side down on the cutting board and cut into 1/2 – 3/4″ thick wedges.
- If you like the pointed edges on your sweet potato wedges, leave the ends intact, then cut a thin slice off of the length of a sweet potato to create a flat surface. Place cut side down on the cutting board, then cut in half. Place cut side down on the cutting board and cut into 1/2 – 3/4″ thick wedges.
How to make this recipe
This sweet potato fries recipe only requires a few ingredients and about 10 minutes of prep, so they’re the perfect quick and easy side dish.
The best part is that you can make your sweet potato fries without boiling! These fries cook up very quickly, so no boiling is necessary.
Preheat the grill to medium high heat.
Toss the sweet potato wedges with the olive oil, salt and pepper on a rimmed baking sheet.
Place the wedges on the grill, and reduce the heat to medium. Grill for 6 minutes or until nicely charred, then flip and grill for 6-8 minutes longer or until softened.
How to tell when grilled sweet potato fries are done
The fries will have a slightly “blistered” appearance when they’re ready. When in doubt, pierce gently with the tip of a knife.
Recipe notes
- These fries are great with the peel on or off — you decide!
- Prep your sweet potato wedges ahead of time and store in the refrigerator in an air tight container until ready to grill. Bring to room temperature before grilling as they’ll take longer to grill when they’re cold.
- Change your sweet potato fries up by tossing with your favorite herbs and seasonings, or serve them with your favorite dipping sauce.

Sriracha ketchup?! OMG. Sweet potato fries are the superior fries, especially with this ketchup!
The sriracha ketchup was a first for me and I loved it! It definitely was a nice compliment to the sweet/charred fries! 🙂
Amazing, Marcie! Sweet potato fries are my absolute weakness. I don’t like regular sweet potatoes, but I love the fries (strange, I know) and always order them out and have even made my own before. I love that you threw these on the grill! They look beautiful with those grill marks. And that sriracha ketchup sounds like it goes perfectly with these. Pinned!
I can see why you would like the fries over regular sweet potatoes — they’re so crispy. These aren’t crispy, but the way they get blistered and charred really change the texture of the outside as well as the flavor. The ketchup made them extra special for me. 🙂 Thanks for the pin!
Grilled is pretty much the best way to make fries, but I’ve never made sweet potato fries on the grill! Time to remedy that because these look incredible.
I’d never grilled a potato before these — and I really don’t why I didn’t know they would be so terrific? Better late than never I suppose! Have a great day, Kelly!
Sweet potato fries are one of my favorite sides! I love that these are sweet and smokey and the addition of the sriracha to the ketchup is perfect! And to top it all off you added the ginger and orange juice which I always love!
I have a hard time not adding maple, ginger, and orange any time I make sweet potato anything — they just taste so great together! The sriracha was a fun new addition to the mix, and I’ll definitely be using it again. Thanks, Ashley, and have a great week! 🙂
Yum!! I love everything about this! The grill, the sauce…just everything! We are major sweet potato lovers in this house so I am always looking for new ways to prepare them!
We’re the same way…it’s all about sweet potatoes! I’ve been grilling them now like they’re going out of style. Hope you get to try them, Annie! 🙂
Marcie I have seriously been thinking about these all day after I quickly glanced at them this morning!!
That ketchup! I’m dying over here! And why have I never grilled sweet potato fries before? This is happening soon.
The first time I made them I couldn’t stop thinking about them and did it AGAIN the next day — they’re just addicting! I can’t believe I never tried this sooner. Thanks, Ashley, and I hope your husband grills you up some fries soon! 🙂
These restaurants need to get on the sweet potato bandwagon, or they’ll be left behind in the dust! haha Thanks, Lindsey! 🙂
Hahha everything is better with grill marks indeed!! Love the sweet and spicy sauce to go with 😉
Thanks, Zainab! It’s funny how grill marks do that, isn’t it? 🙂
These fries are seriously amazing! Grilled makes them even more incredible.
Grilling did make them more incredible! Thank you, Jocelyn! 🙂
Sweet potato fries and Sriracha ketchup is amazing. I can pretty much put Sriracha on anything, but it’s so perfect against the sweet potato. Love the beautiful grill marks on the potatoes.
Thank you, Kathy! 🙂
I got slightly confused by this at first because in the UK a grill is a broiler … I think … anyway, I get it now …
… and it’s a fabulous idea! I love sweet potato fries, too, and bonus that they’re so healthy. That ketchup is genius, as well. 🙂
I can see how you got confused! I had no idea grilling was called something else in the UK…oops! Thanks, Helen, and I hope you have a great weekend! 🙂
Grilled fries sound so delicious! I am seriously crazy for sweet potato fries. They are one thing that I alway order when we go out. That sriracha ketchup sounds so amazing! My son has become crazy for spicy foods. I need to make this! Pinning!

Thank you, Juliana! I don’t get around to flavoring ketchup up enough, so this was really tasty! Have a nice weekend! 🙂
I wish I had thought of this sooner — they’re so easy and no oven is a winner in summer! Thanks for the pin, Kelly, and have a great weekend! 🙂
Ok, I know I just commented, but I have to say something about these fries. I wish I could make them tonight to go with our grill, but we don’t have sweet potatoes. Rats! I will have to wait. Thanks so much for sharing!!!

Thank you, Catherine! These fries are so smoky, and there really is no bad way to eat sweet potatoes is there?

Thank you, Cynthia! That sweet and spicy thing always gets me. 🙂
Marcie, these sweet potato fries look amazing! I just love the sweet and spicy combo with the sriracha ketchup! Can’t believe how fast they cook!
Thank you Kelly! They’re such a quick and easy side!
I would definitely choose sweet potato fries over regular fries! I’ve been preparing mine in the air fryer lately, but I need to try them on the grill! Those grill marks are so eye catching!
I still need to try them in the air fryer — that thing is still in the box! 😱
Love this recipe! I lost it for a couple years and found it again. Did you update this recipe? I could’ve sworn it had maple syrup in it at one point to coat the potatoes.
Thanks for your feedback! I did update the recipe, and opted not to coat the potatoes in the syrup as the fries burn easier that way. Plus they’re sweet enough right? 😘
