Guacamole is one of our all time favorite dips, so I make this Homemade Guacamole Recipe very often. I love that it’s versatile enough to serve as a snack, or as a condiment for fajitas, baked tacos, and chicken burrito bowls.

It’s just never a bad idea. šŸ™‚

Originally I used to include garlic, red onion, jalapeƱo and diced fresh tomato in this guacamole recipe, but I’ve learned that my family and I prefer a simpler version with the ingredients below.

Ingredient notes

  • Avocados. This recipe includes (4) large avocados, just be sure that they’re ripe. A perfectly ripe avocado will be firm yet soft when gently pressed. Avoid overly soft, mushy avocados.
  • Olive oil. This is a secret ingredient that lends a silkiness and sheen to the guacamole. A little is all you need, and it does make a difference.
  • Lime juice. This guacamole recipe is simple, and lime juice is one of the key ingredients. Make sure to use fresh lime juice as bottled just doesn’t have that fresh flavor.
  • Cilantro. Fresh cilantro really sets this recipe apart. If you’re not a fan of cilantro, you may omit it and add chopped fresh parsley instead.
  • Optional add-in’s. Consider adding diced fresh tomato, chopped red onion, garlic or jalapeƱo to spice things up.

How to make this recipe

There are a lot of different interpretations of homemade guacamole, including using a mortar and pestle to mash the avocado until perfectly smooth.  

While I’ve eaten it that way too, my favorite way to enjoy it is when it’s rustic and chunky like this version.

Pro tip:Ā  Homemade guacamole is best served immediately to prevent oxidation, but if you make it a few hours ahead, reserve the pits from the avocados and nestle them into the guacamole and cover with plastic wrap.

How to make guacamole collage
  1. Halve the avocados.
  2. Whack the blade of a knife into the center of the avocado pit. 
  3. Pull the pit out of the avocado.
  4. Use a spoon to scoop the avocado flesh out and place in a bowl medium bowl.
  5. Using a butter knife, slice the avocado against the sides of the bowl until it’s in chunks (or mash with a fork if you prefer a smoother consistency).
  6. Add the oil, lime juice, chopped cilantro and salt and pepper to taste, and stir gently to combine.
