Dodger Blue Velvet Cupcakes
This post is serving two purposes: (1) I’m celebrating opening day for Major League Baseball by serving up cupcakes decorated in honor of my favorite baseball team; (2) these Dodger Blue Velvet Cupcakes are a bit of an April fool’s riff on red velvet cupcakes. The joke was actually on me. I got into a fight with blue food coloring, and the food coloring won. 😡 My cupcakes didn’t turn out the beautiful Dodger blue hue that I was striving for. They’re more aqua. I guess I could call these Aqua Velvet cupcakes, then? Not to be confused with the after shave, of course. 😉 I almost didn’t even write this post because of the color, but I thought the whole thing made perfect sense, being that it was being posted on April Fool’s Day. Hey, I tried. 😆
The funny thing is, I hatched a plan for these blue velvet cupcakes some time ago. It never occurred to me that they wouldn’t turn out the perfect blue. Maybe that’s because I don’t use food coloring very often at all. I’m just not a fan of making food an artificial color. The exception, of course, is red velvet cake, because it’s one of my absolute favorites! I figured for Dodger Blue Velvet Cupcakes, I could simply just follow my recipe for Red Velvet Cupcakes, but just use the same amount of blue food coloring. Wrong! I went through (3) tubes of blue gel food coloring, and it never got bluer…it got greener. 😡 I was very perturbed by this! It’s the pits when you think you have a wonderful idea and it doesn’t work out as planned. 😥
Although my plan backfired…aqua of all colors!…I had my kids decorate the cupcakes with Cadbury mini eggs and Easter sprinkles and give them to their baseball teammates after practice. I think they did a tremendous job!
Blue or no blue, I decided to go ahead with this post. Maybe I’ll figure out how to get a true blue color one day. A little research on this would’ve been a good idea. I just never imagined. AQUA!?!?! I’m not giving up.
Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I’m booed often when I wear my Dodger gear. I’m always asked why I’m a Dodger fan. Did I live in L.A.? Nope, I’ve never lived there. When I was 9 years old, I watched my first World Series, which was the Dodgers vs. the Yankees. The Dodgers were the underdogs against the big, bad Yankees. Those were the Reggie Jackson years! I’m totally dating myself. The Dodgers did end up losing the Series that year — but I became a true blue fan then and there. Despite some very tough years recently, I’ve never wavered. I know we’ll turn things around. 🙂
At any rate, happy April Fool’s Day. The joke was on me today! I at least hope my team beats the World Champion San Francisco Giants tonight. That would make my day! GO BLUE! 😀
