If you had a choice between sweet potato and regular fries, which ones would you choose?  While I love both, I almost always choose sweet potato fries!

A lot of people that I talk to tell me that they’re not into sweet potatoes, and it’s mostly because they associate them with sweet potato casserole.

While I enjoy my sweet potato casserole for the holidays, I prefer savory sweet potato recipes like my roasted sweet potatoes and these grilled sweet potato fries so much more.

These grilled sweet potato fries are so special because they’re sweet and smoky, incredibly easy, and everyone always loves them.

It’s a great idea to grill these fries in the summertime, because who wants to turn the oven on when it’s hot outside?

Everything tastes better with grill marks too. 🙂

I served my sweet potato fries with an easy, sweet and spicy sriracha ketchup.  It’s completely optional, but it will take your fries to the next level!

How to cut sweet potato fries

It’s so much easier to cut sweet potato wedges into uniform size and thickness when the sweet potatoes are around the same size.

Look for sweet potatoes that are small to medium in size and on the thinner side.

Sweet potato wedges may be cut two different ways:

  • Cut the ends off of both sides of the sweet potato.  Stand the sweet potato upright on a cutting board, and cut in half, then place cut side down on the cutting board and cut into 1/2 – 3/4″ thick wedges.
  • If you like the pointed edges on your sweet potato wedges, leave the ends intact, then cut a thin slice off of the length of a sweet potato to create a flat surface.  Place cut side down on the cutting board, then cut in half.  Place cut side down on the cutting board and cut into 1/2 – 3/4″ thick wedges.

How to make this recipe

This sweet potato fries recipe only requires a few ingredients and about 10 minutes of prep, so they’re the perfect quick and easy side dish.

The best part is that you can make your sweet potato fries without boiling!  These fries cook up very quickly, so no boiling is necessary.

Preheat the grill to medium high heat.

Toss the sweet potato wedges with the olive oil, salt and pepper on a rimmed baking sheet.

Place the wedges on the grill, and reduce the heat to medium.  Grill for 6 minutes or until nicely charred, then flip and grill for 6-8 minutes longer or until softened.

How to tell when grilled sweet potato fries are done

The fries will have a slightly “blistered” appearance when they’re ready.  When in doubt, pierce gently with the tip of a knife.

Recipe notes

  • These fries are great with the peel on or off — you decide!
  • Prep your sweet potato wedges ahead of time and store in the refrigerator in an air tight container until ready to grill.  Bring to room temperature before grilling as they’ll take longer to grill when they’re cold.
  • Change your sweet potato fries up by tossing with your favorite herbs and seasonings, or serve them with your favorite dipping sauce.

  • Preheat the grill to medium high heat.
  • Toss the sweet potatoes with the olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste on a large rimmed baking sheet until well coated.

Prepare the sriracha ketchup:

  • Place the ketchup, sriracha, orange juice, and ginger in a small bowl and stir until combined. Set aside.

Notes

  • These fries are great with the peel on or off — you decide!
  • Prep your sweet potato wedges ahead of time and store in the refrigerator in an air tight container until ready to grill.  Bring to room temperature before grilling as they'll take longer to grill when they're cold.
  • Change your sweet potato fries up by tossing with your favorite herbs and seasonings, or serve them with your favorite dipping sauce.
  • Grated ginger can be quite spicy, so use less if you'd like it to be more of a background flavor. To grate ginger easily, freeze ginger root and grate it, peel and all, with a Microplane grater.
