Homemade Hostess Cupcakes
Hostess cupcakes, real or homemade, take me back to simpler days — playing kickball outside all afternoon, watching the Brady Bunch on t.v., listening to the Monkees sing “Daydream Believer”, and having sleepovers with my best friend. As I got older, it was rushing to 7 Eleven after work with my roommate to purchase Hostess cupcakes for that evening’s episode of Melrose Place. Come on, you know you watched it, too. My palate has changed a lot since then, but I’m still a sucker for cupcakes decorated like the classic. Is it the nostalgia that the cupcake brings or the whimsical white icing squiggle that makes me feel young again? The light chocolate cake, fluffy, marshmallow cream filling, fudgy chocolate icing, and that whimsy, little squiggle, will be sure to transport you back to those days again. Wait — you were alive when the Brady Bunch and Monkees were popular, right?! 😉
I’ve been searching high and low for the right Homemade Hostess Cupcake recipe. Some looked perfect, but when I read the comments or ratings, many bakers said that they didn’t taste like the original. I finally settled on the Fauxstess Cupcakes on Annie’s Eats. I followed the cake recipe exactly, as I was curious to see if the cupcakes tasted like an authentic Hostess cupcake. To me, these cupcakes tasted very close, without that processed flavor, of course! The recipe may have been just a bit more labor intensive as the others due to the fact that Annie whipped egg whites with sugar and folded it into the cake batter to make it light and fluffy. I’m all for the extra steps when they’re worth taking, and this one was, because it resulted in such a nice, light, chocolate cake.
Annie’s recipe called for her homemade marshmallow creme, but I opted to buy pre-made Jet Puff marshmallow creme as I was beginning to get lazy after making the cupcakes. 😆 Basically, this was my only deviation from her recipe. I’m not the greatest decorator of cakes, and cookies, mostly because I don’t have much patience in that area, but decorating these was just fun. I was even sorry when I ran out of cupcakes to decorate. That white icing against the dark chocolate ganache just looks so dramatic and enticing. You can’t find cupcakes that transport you to your carefree younger years too often, so when you do, you’ve just gotta make ’em. The recipe is just a click away!
