This Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice is a warm and cozy blend of spices that’s essential for pumpkin pie, cookies, oatmeal and of course lattés! It comes together in minutes and keeps in the pantry for up to 3 months!

Bowl of pumpkin pie spice ingredients

Several years I ago I went to make a batch of pumpkin muffins and I realized that I didn’t have any pumpkin pie spice.

I searched the internet for a list of pumpkin spice ingredients, and thankfully I had each one in my pantry.

I immediately got to work creating this Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice, which has been a staple for my fall baking ever since.

I realize that it’s really easy to purchase it, but I’m a bit particular about mine.

I prefer it to be heavy on the cinnamon, ginger and cloves, and light on the nutmeg, which gives my pumpkin pie bars and pumpkin pecan pie the perfect balance of warm, cozy flavors for me.

It’s completely worth it for me to make it myself, and it’s highly unlikely that I’ll ever buy it again. 🙂

Ingredient notes

  • Cinnamon. This is an essential ingredient as it adds a nice sweet, warm spicy flavor.
  • Ground ginger. Adds a sweet, pungent spicy flavor that really makes the flavors pop.
  • Ground cloves. This is an aromatic spice that lends really warm, almost sweet flavor.
  • Allspice. The allspice is a blend of warm spices that is often confused with Chinese 5 spice. It adds dimension to the pumpkin spice mix, but if you don’t have any on hand you can omit it or sub it with ground mace or a bit of my chai spice mix.
  • Nutmeg. This adds sweet, nutty, woody flavors.

FAQs

What spices are in pumpkin pie spice?

Typically pumpkin pie spice includes cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and cloves.   If you like your pumpkin pie spice with cardamom, you can certainly add anywhere from 1-2 teaspoons to this recipe to change it up.

Not all pumpkin pie spice is created equally, which is why I decided to make my own.   I found myself doctoring up the store bought brands with more of the spices that I felt were lacking.

I prefer pumpkin pie spice to be big on cinnamon and very minimal on nutmeg.  I add a little extra ginger to provide a nice kick, and enough allspice and clove to provide a deep, bold flavor.

How do you make homemade pumpkin spice?

Gather your spices and measure them out into a small bowl.  From there, whisk to combine, breaking up clumps.

How to store pumpkin spice mix

Store your homemade pumpkin pie spice in an airtight container for up to 3 months in a cool, dark place.

What is a substitute for pumpkin pie spice?

If you’re not a fan of pumpkin spice or you don’t have the ingredients for it, you can simply substitute it with ground cinnamon.
