Instructions

Choose your recipes.

  • Whether it's 3 recipes or 10 recipes, this will help you determine what size box(es) to purchase. They can be as big or small as you choose!
Choose a variety of recipes that will provide an assortment of colors, flavors and textures. If time is scarce, be sure to keep time consuming recipes like sugar cookies and gingerbread cookies to a minimum. I love incorporating some easy no-bake recipes like rocky road candy and peanut butter fudge, bar desserts like seven layer magic cookie bars and peppermint brownies, and even a few store bought items like candy canes or Hershey's kisses in pretty foil wrappers.

Choose your boxes.

  • The wood supply organizer that I used for this box is perfect for holiday gatherings or potlucks as there is plenty of room for a wide variety of treats (see the link in the equipment section above!). Smaller Christmas cookie boxes, tins or large plates with cellophane are perfect to package cookies to give as gifts. Use parchment paper to line your boxes or layer between cookies as needed, or baking cups may be used to separate candy, etc. If you plan to ship cookies, decorative tins are your best bet to keep cookies fresh and intact!

Select decorations and materials.

  • Pretty decorations and materials will make your box of cookies next level. I used mini pine cones, mini glass ornaments and baking twine, and don't forget the pretty bows and tags for packaging!

Determine what equipment you need.

  • Baking sheets, mixing bowls, a rolling pin, hand mixer and cookie cutters are examples of what you'll need to prepare a variety of cookies, etc.
Be sure to read each recipe over carefully to make sure that you have all of the necessary equipment.

Write a shopping list.

  • Make a list and check it twice! Bringing a list to the store with you will ensure that you don't forget any of the ingredients that you need to prepare each recipe that you plan to make.

Plan your schedule.

  • Determine when you will prepare your recipes, keeping in mind when you will package them into boxes for delivery or shipping. Remember that cookie dough may be made up to a few days in advance, then you can bake them when you're ready. I often decorate cookies the day after I bake them if I'm pressed for time.
You can also get started earlier in the month and freeze cookies (prior to decorating of course). Simply thaw a day before you plan to assemble your boxes!

Notes

  • Once the cookies have been baked, store in an air tight container or zip top bag at room temperature with parchment or waxed paper between cookies as needed until you're ready to assemble your packages.
  • The freezer is your friend!  You can get started baking earlier in the month and freeze cookies in zip top freezer bags and thaw when you're ready to assemble your cookie gift boxes.  For sugar and gingerbread cookies, freeze after baking, then thaw and decorate.
