This Baked Sweet Potato recipe has been our new favorite! The sweet, nutty flavor is a delicious change from my classic air fryer baked potatoes, and they pair beautifully with a variety of dishes as well.

They’re tender and caramelized with a crispy skin that’s completely irresistible. I love that the prep is minimal, and cooking them is completely hands off.

Side dishes truly don’t get easier than this! 🙂

Ingredient notes

  • Sweet potatoes. Any variety of sweet potatoes will work such as Garnet, Hannah, Japanese, Jewel and Purple Stoke. Do choose sweet potatoes that are similar in size so that they are ready at the same time.
  • Olive oil. Rub a bit of olive oil over each potato to help the salt adhere to the skin and helps it crisp up nicely.
  • Salt. The skins of the sweet potatoes are seasoned with a bit of salt. They are full of fiber so they’re great to eat!

Recipe FAQs

What is the best temperature to bake a sweet potato?

Bake at a higher temperature of 425 degrees to cook them a bit more quickly, to get a nice crispy skin, and to promote caramelization.

Is it better to wrap baked sweet potatoes in foil when baking?

I prefer not to wrap sweet potatoes in foil when they’re baked in the oven. Wrapping them in foil will steam the potatoes, which prevents the skins from becoming nice and crispy.

Do you have to poke sweet potatoes before you bake them?

It’s very important to poke, or prick the sweet potatoes all over with a fork before baking to allow steam to escape. The pricks don’t have to be deep at all, just mainly on the surface of the sweet potatoes.

Can I make baked sweet potatoes in advance?

This recipe is great for meal prep! Simply reheat in the microwave, oven or air fryer, then stuff them or top them with your favorite toppings!

Should you eat baked sweet potato skin?

Most of the fiber content in sweet potato comes from the skin, so it should be eaten! Coat your sweet potato with olive oil and salt (or your favorite spices), then place it in the oven and bake until tender.

The oil helps crisp up the skin as it bakes, which adds great texture, and the salt accentuates the flavor. This makes the sweet potato skin absolutely irresistible!
