If you’ve followed along here for a while, you know that I love overnight oats. This is mostly due to the fact that I’m not a morning person, and I love breakfasts that I can prep ahead.

My coconut overnight oats and blueberry overnight oats have been my go-to recipes for years, but when I’m craving something rich and chocolatey, these German Chocolate Overnight Oats completely satisfy!

German chocolate cake and German chocolate brownies are my favorite, so I created this recipe with those flavors in mind.

These no cook oats have double chocolate flavor with both cocoa powder and mini dark chocolate chips, and they wouldn’t be German chocolate without coconut and pecans.

They’re surprisingly wholesome as they include whole grain rolled oats and chia seeds, and they’re dairy and gluten-free.

They take about 10 minutes to prep, and they’re ready for you in the morning so that you barely have to lift a finger to get breakfast on the table.

All mornings should start this way! 🙂

Recipe ingredients

Chocolate overnight oats recipe ingredients.
  • Oats. Rolled oats are best for this recipe as they provide a nice texture, but quick oats may be used if that’s all you have on hand. If you enjoy steel cut oats, be sure to see my recipe for overnight steel cut oats. They have a nice chewy texture!
  • Cocoa powder. Use unsweetened cocoa powder to control the sweetness.
  • Maple syrup. Substitute with your favorite sweetener.
  • Chia seeds. I highly recommend chia seeds as they help thicken the oats and they provide a boost of fiber and nutrition. If you don’t have any on hand, decrease the amount of milk to 2 cups.
  • Almond milk. The almond milk may be substituted with your favorite milk.
  • Coconut. I prefer using unsweetened shredded coconut to control the amount of sweetness, but sweetened shredded coconut may be substituted.
  • Pecans. Sub with your favorite nuts as desired.
  • Chocolate chips. Mini dark chocolate chips are completely optional.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use instant or steel cut oats instead of rolled oats?

For best results, use rolled oats as they absorb the liquid well and provide a nice creamy texture. Instant oats can become mushy, while steel cut oats have a much chewier texture.

If you prefer to use steel cut oats, see my recipe for overnight steel cut oats.

Can I heat my chocolate overnight oats?

Chocolate overnight oats can be eaten warm or cold. To heat, simply place them in the microwave and heat at 30 second intervals, stirring after each, until the oats reach the desired temperature.

There are several great ways to add protein to these overnight oats. Add a scoop or two of your favorite protein powder, or 1/2 – 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt. They’re also great drizzled with your favorite nut butter.
