Sweet potatoes are a favorite in my family, so I make them a number of different ways to change things up.

My baked sweet potato recipe and oven roasted sweet potatoes are tried and true favorites, but I love using my air fryer for quick and easy side dishes.

My air fryer sweet potato fries are one of my most popular recipes because they’re tender, crispy and completely addictive.

These Air Fryer Roasted Sweet Potatoes are just as addictive with a sweet and spicy blend of honey, chili powder, garlic powder and cayenne pepper.

The sweet and savory flavors make this side dish completely irresistible, and it cooks up in about 20 minutes.

This is definitely one of my favorite easy air fryer recipes. 🙂

Recipe ingredients

Air fryer roasted sweet potatoes recipe ingredients.
  • Sweet potatoes. You’ll need 2 large sweet potatoes, or roughly 2 lbs. for this recipe. I used garnet yams, but your favorite variety will work perfectly. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into uniform sized cubes to ensure that they cook evenly.
  • Olive oil. The oil promotes browning and crispness. Sub with avocado oil or your favorite variety.
  • Honey. Adds sweet flavor that complements the spices. Sub with maple syrup to make this vegan.
  • Spices. Chili powder, garlic powder and cayenne pepper create spicy, savory flavor that pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the sweet potatoes. Sub with your favorite seasonings, or try my blackened seasoning recipe or homemade jamaican jerk seasoning.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make roast sweet potatoes in the air fryer without oil?

Oil is optional, but I recommend using oil as it makes the sweet potatoes nice and crispy.

How long do you cook sweet potatoes in the air fryer?

Sweet potatoes cut into 1/2″ cubes will take about 20-25 minutes to cook at 400 degrees. All air fryer temperatures vary, so be sure to check for doneness after 15 minutes. I also recommend tossing the sweet potatoes every 5 minutes or so to ensure even cooking.

Why did my air fryer roasted sweet potatoes turn black?

Below are some common reasons for air fryer roasted sweet potatoes to turn black:

1). The oven temperature is too high. Cook the sweet potatoes no higher than 400 degrees, but be sure to monitor the sweet potatoes for doneness and reduce the temperature to 375 degrees or lower if they brown too quickly.

2). Air fryer basket is over crowded. If your air fryer basket is overcrowded, it could result in uneven cooking. To ensure that they cook evenly, toss and flip the sweet potatoes every 5 minutes or so or cook them in batches.

3). Sugar and seasonings. Seasonings that contain sugar can burn when they’re exposed to high heat. Toss the sweet potatoes frequently and lower the temperature as needed.

4). Residue or buildup in the air fryer. Be sure that your air fryer basket is clean as food residue, oil or burnt particles can stick to the sweet potatoes and cause them to blacken.
