Greek Yogurt Ranch Dressing
Homemade Greek Yogurt Ranch Dressing is the healthy way to enjoy ranch dressing! It’s creamy, packed with protein and bursting with fresh flavor!
Over the years I’ve made prepping salad dressing part of my weekly meal prep routine.
That’s partly because we eat a lot of salad, but mostly because homemade simply tastes better.
My coleslaw dressing and louie salad dressing are always on repeat, and this Greek Yogurt Ranch is also a tried and true favorite.
The best part is that there are so many ways to use it! It can be served up as part of crudités platter, served with air fryer chicken wings or served over butter lettuce salad.
It can be customized so many ways as well. Consider spicing things up with jalapeño like this jalapeño ranch!
Why you’ll love this recipe:
- This Greek Yogurt Ranch Dressing is better for you than those mayo-laden ranch dressing recipes. Greek yogurt is packed with protein and calcium, and you decide whether you want to use full fat or lighten up with low fat.
- It’s tangy and flavorful with buttermilk, lemon juice and plenty of fresh herbs.
- It’s a healthy dip for veggies and buffalo chicken wings, or as a dressing for your favorite salad.
Recipe ingredients
- Greek yogurt. I use full fat Greek yogurt in this recipe for its creamy richness, but low fat or fat-free may be used if you’re watching your fat intake.
- Buttermilk. I use low fat buttermilk, which adds a nice tang and also thins the yogurt out.
- Lemon juice. Use fresh lemon juice as it has a much fresher flavor than bottled.
- Spices. Onion and garlic powder add a nice savory flavor. Fresh garlic may be used if desired.
- Fresh herbs. The fresh herbs are what really makes this Greek yogurt ranch next level. I used a combination of Italian flat leaf parsley, dill and chives, which all add amazing flavor. I don’t recommend using dried herbs over fresh as the flavor will not be the same.
How to make this recipe
This Greek yogurt ranch dressing comes together super quickly with almost no prep at all, and you can decide whether to whisk the ingredients together or process them in a food processor.
- Place the Greek yogurt, buttermilk, lemon juice, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper and herbs into a medium bowl and whisk to combine.
- Alternatively, place all the ingredients into a food processor and pulse until combined. When prepared using this method, the dressing will have a slightly green tint to it from the herbs.
FAQs
The healthiest alternative to ranch dressing is making it from scratch because you control the ingredients. This Greek yogurt ranch dressing is a healthier alternative because it includes Greek yogurt instead of mayo and sour cream. Greek yogurt includes protein, calcium, and you can choose full fat, low fat or non fat.
Full fat Greek yogurt is relatively high in fat like mayo, but it includes protein, calcium and probiotics. You can also opt for low fat or non fat versions if you wish to reduce your fat intake.
Recipe notes
- Leftover dressing may be stored in an air tight container in the fridge for up to one week.
- While dried herbs may be used in this recipe, use fresh herbs for best results. The fresh herbs add a fresh, vibrant flavor that dried herbs simply don’t.

used this and tasted nothing like ranch.
I’m sorry you felt that way.
Wow! This recipe is amazing! Love that there is no oil! I used the fresh herbs! I will never buy ranch dressing again!
Thank you so much for the review and I’m glad you love the recipe!
Could you sub heavy cream for buttermilk ? Thanks
You could, but the dressing will be a bit richer and it won’t have that tangy flavor.
Hi! I am excited to try this recipe! Can I use 2% milk in place of buttermilk?
Hello! You certainly can!
I tried to make this with all fresh ingredients and it tastes like tartar sauce instead of ranch. Do you have any idea ideas on how I went wrong?
Hi Jason! This dressing has never tasted like tartar sauce when I’ve made it, so I’m not sure what went wrong. Did you make any substitutions?
I wish that I could say that I did. Maybe I used too much Greek Yogurt?
Even with a bit more Greek yogurt, I’m not sure how this dressing would taste like tartar sauce? I wish I knew what went wrong.
I think it was the fresh dill. Dill can be pretty overpowering to some people, like myself. I suggest trying it again without the dill. You may also want to make sure it’s really well blended.
Thank you for your feedback Lorna!
I absolutely LOVE this dressing! I’ve made this many times and it’s now pretty much a staple in our refrigerator. I am going through a very bad Plantar fasciitis from last 4 months and nothing helped. Now I have to take shock treatment to get that healed.
Hope you will recover from your knee issue soon and resume your exercise routine.
I’m so sorry that your having difficulties Balvinder and I hope you recover soon!
Oh no! This is my first time hearing of your sprained knee – I sure hope you are feeling better now. On a side note, this is my first tine hearing of “piloxing” I didn’t realize it existed! But onto this mayo-free ranch dressing! Thanks so much for this – like you, am not a huge fan of mayo, using Greek yogurt is such a brilliant idea! I’ve never made my own ranch dressing and now I cannot wait to try this healthier version!
Thanks Shashi! My knee feels so much better now. Piloxing was so fun but now I’m afraid to go back. 🙂
Marcie! ‘m sorry about your knee! I had a knee injury a few years ago and I’m still feeling the after effects. You do know that I love the no-mayo recipes! Can’t wait to try this one and dip ALL the veggies in it!
Thank you and I’m sorry to hear that you’re knee is still giving you problems. I’m totally afraid mine will too. 🙁 I’m glad you love no-mayo recipes too!
Oh I’m sorry to hear about your knee, Marcie! I’m sure that was painful. Hopefully you’ll be all healed soon! This dressing is calling my name! I absolutely love ranch dressing and the fact that you made it with Greek yogurt sounds delicious! I’ve got to try this, as I know I would put this on just about everything!
