Homemade Coleslaw Dressing
Homemade Coleslaw Dressing is and easy coleslaw dressing recipe made with only 3 simple ingredients! It’s creamy, tangy and absolutely delicious!
I’ve been wanting to share this Homemade Coleslaw Dressing with you for quite some time, but kept talking myself out of it because it’s barely even a recipe.
3 ingredients counts as a recipe doesn’t it??
Obviously I think it does count because at long last I’m sharing it with you today.
This creamy coleslaw dressing recipe is something that I make all the time, so I think you’ll find it useful too.
Homemade Coleslaw Dressing
Most of my life I avoided coleslaw because I hate mayo. All of the coleslaws that I was exposed to growing up looked really unappealing, with thick, gloppy mayo-based dressings.
There was no way I wanted to eat that!
Years ago I discovered a vegan mayonnaise called Vegenaise, and it changed everything for me. I haven’t been paid to promote this product — it’s simply a product that I love and it’s always in my fridge.
Vegenaise products are vegan, gluten-free, dairy free, non-GMO and are made with heart healthy oils. They’re completely plant-based and come in soy and soy-free varieties.
I’ve been known to use Greek yogurt in my creamy coleslaw dressing on occasion, but I prefer to use Vegenaise because it has such great flavor. It’s the perfect base for dressings.
How to make homemade coleslaw dressing
For me, a great coleslaw dressing must be (3) things:
- creamy
- tangy
- sweet
This dressing hits all three marks!
The vegan mayonnaise gives my dressing a nice creamy base, then I add a considerable amount of apple cider vinegar to give it lots of tang.
From there I add pure maple syrup — my sweetener of choice. I normally add 2 tablespoons, but if you want a sweeter dressing you can always add up to 1-2 more tablespoons.
Recipe tips and substitutions
- The Vegenaise may be substituted with your favorite mayo or Greek yogurt.
- Change things up by adding poppy seeds, curry powder, or chopped herbs!
- This coleslaw dressing recipe is great in cabbage-based coleslaws as well as broccoli salads, shaved brussels sprout salads, and especially broccoli slaw.

Homemade Coleslaw Dressing
Ingredients
- 1 cup Vegenaise substitute with your favorite mayo or Greek yogurt
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
- salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Place all ingredients into a medium bowl and whisk until smooth.
- Pour the dressing into an airtight container and store in the fridge for 1-2 weeks.
Notes
- *Vegenaise is a plant-based, healthy alternative to mayo that's non-GMO, gluten free, and made with heart healthy oils. The original contains soy, but I love the soy-free variety as well. I'm not being compensated to promote this product...I just love it!
- If you're not following a vegan diet, you can certainly substitute the Vegenaise with Greek yogurt or mayo or a combination of both.
- This dressing can easily be changed up by adding poppy seeds, curry powder or herbs!

Marcie, your photos are GORGEOUS! I love that this is just three ingredients and contains no mayo. And such a great idea to use maple syrup instead of sugar. My kind of dressing! I bet you could find a lot of different uses for this, too. Sound so good!
Thank you so much Gayle — I appreciate that! I do find a lot of uses for this — it’s not just for ‘slaw!
Two thumbs up for Vegenaise! It’s crazy how hard it can be to find non-dairy mayo at standard grocery stores. We looked for some when we went home to Florida for Christmas and all they had were giant tubs on the very bottom shelf. No one wants to try something for the first time by buying a gallon of it! Maybe that was just the city we were in but it was frustrating to say the least.
Anyway, this dressing sounds incredible and you know I love that it’s dairy-free! 🙂
Vegenaise is the only non-dairy vegan mayo I’ve ever tried — I love it so much that I’ve never looked further! Thanks Sarah! 🙂
Ugh, I hate mayo too! It just grosses me out. I don’t think I’ve ever tried Vegenaise – I’ll have to check it out.
I hope you try it Nicole — it’s great!
This is such a great recipe to share Marcie. I love homemade salad dressings for their minimal and less processed ingredients. I’m not a fan of mayo either, so I always avoid coleslaw dressing. Not anymore! Definitely trying this one!
Thanks Leanne and I hope you get to try this soon! 🙂
This is such a great back pocket recipe. I love Vegenaise too! It has great flavour…I’ve often wished more restaurants would use it instead of mayo. Pinning this for sure!
Back pocket recipes don’t make it here often and I need to change that! Thanks Katherine!
Love this coleslaw dressing ! Your photos look amazing! Can’t wait to try this!
Thank you so much Mira! 🙂
I’m with you – regular mayo has always just grossed me out for some reason! Love this simple dressing (I always hesitate to share super simple things too!) – I’m definitely looking forward to that slaw you have coming our way!!
I’ll never get over my hatred for mayo apparently and it sounds like a lot of people feel the same! Thanks so much Ashley!
I love the way your recipe sounds without mayo. Will love to try and get a jar of veganaise.
Thanks Balvinder and I hope you get to try it!
I’m glad you decided to share this, Marcie, because it’s BRILLIANT! While I don’t mind mayo, I’d prefer to skip it, and I happen to love coleslaw, so this dressing is just perfect for me! I can see VATS of this in my immediate future!! Pinned! Cheers!
Thanks Cheyanne! It’s those easy recipes that we make day in and day out that should be shared right? 🙂
Hi. I substituted Greek yoghurt for the vegenaise and honey for maple syrup and it was delish. I’m not vegan but I just don’t like mayo. Thanks for your recipe👍
I’m so glad you enjoyed the dressing Robyn! Greek yogurt is definitely my second favorite choice. 🙂
Can I use sugar free syrup versus pure?
Absolutely! 🙂
Which other type of sweetener can be used in a broccoli slaw dressing?
I’m Diabetic..Tia
How would honey, mustard dressing taste? I’m guessing I need honey, mustard & apple cider vinegar?
I’m not a cook..lol
Thank you
You can certainly use stevia or a sweetener that your doctor or nutritionist has approved? You could always leave out the sweetener altogether.
How much should I add to a typical bag of coleslaw mix, roughly 14 oz?
I typically just eye ball it, but I’d suggest anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 cup.
